The poison dart frog (Dendrobatidae) is a fascinating creature. This genus lives in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, but it’s not like most frogs. They secrete poison from their skin; when touched or ingested it attacks the nervous system causing convulsions, muscle contractions, salivation, and possibly death. This ability is believed to be derived from their diet, as poison dart frogs in captivity cannot do this. Poison dart frogs are currently threatened by deforestation; the type of biome the rainforests may become is unknown. My future creature, the Poison Tree-Hopper adapted to survive a mixed forest with heavy amounts of sunlight. Their colors and toxicity still vary heavily by species, but they have evolved to have a wider, purple tongue to prevent sunburning and catch larger prey, longer legs to hop from far apart branches, and a semi-prehensile tail helps to hold on to tree limbs.
