The flying squirrel currently lives in the tropical forests of India, dwelling in tree hollows or the canopy, feeding on nuts, seeds, berries, insects, fungi, and lichen. Flying squirrels have a patagium, a flap of skin stretching from their wrists to their ankles, helping them glide from tree to tree.
In the future, the flying squirrel will be renamed the Dustwhisker. Due to climate change, their lush habitat will transform into a savanna, forcing the squirrels to adapt to the arid climate. Their patagium will evolve into wings, allowing them to fly like bats instead of gliding. This adaptation will be crucial, as there will be fewer trees for them to glide to. Additionally, the Dustwhisker will become a predator, as the availability of berries and nuts decreases. With fewer food sources, they will turn carnivorous, marking a significant shift in their behavior and diet.
