Capybaras currently live in the rainforests of South America. The rising temperatures caused by climate change will force the capybaras to either adapt and survive or face extinction. Additionally, deforestation is predicted to drastically reduce the amount of rainfall in South American rainforests. Currently, around 50% of rain comes from trees absorbing water through their roots and transpiring it into the atmosphere of the Amazon rainforest. Deforestation will lead to an extreme lack of water in the Amazon and will result in the habitat becoming a savanna, where the future savanna caybaris species will live. However, the capybara is not an endangered species and is thriving in its present-day habitat. This may give the capybara an edge on climate change and allow it to endure long enough to adapt to the new environment.
