The modern sloth is slow, sedentary, and highly dependent on trees for survival. It has long claws for climbing and defense, as well as thick fur for warmth. However, as climate change progressed, sloths gradually adapted—developing shorter fur and claws. With deforestation reducing their arboreal habitat, they were forced to live on the ground. Though still slow-moving, their claws now serve primarily as a defense mechanism rather than a tool for climbing.
