Poison dart frogs live in the rainforest of central America to the Amazon basin. Unlike many frogs, poison dart frogs are land dwelling instead of aquatic. Rainforests are moist and humid, so they do not need access to water. These frogs are cold-blooded. Poison dart frogs eat ants, fruit flies, and smaller species of beetles. These frogs secrete a toxin called batrachotoxin which is released from glands on their skin. This toxin comes from the plants that their prey eat. The poison dart frogs are bright in color which warns their predators not to eat them.
Due to rising temperatures and deforestation, the dart frog will have to adapt to a new habitat. To stay alive in their new environment, they will need to change their color, develop longer legs, gills, and webbed feet. Over time, they will transition to being warm-blooded. Due to diet impact, their toxicity will decrease.
