Poison dart frogs are typically found in lush, tropical rainforests in Central and South America, such as the Amazon Rainforest. They live on the ground floor and stay away from water, as they cannot swim well. All poison dart frogs have brightly colored skins, which warn predators to stay away or be met with a deadly venom. In the future, the Amazon Rainforest will become dry and savanna-like. To adapt to this, poison dart frogs will move towards water sources such as lakes and rivers, and subsequently develop webbed feet, in order to swim better. While they won’t lose their color completely, they will become more muted in order to fit in with their surroundings. Due to higher temperatures, poison dart frogs will develop a higher temperature tolerance, an extra layer of skin, and techniques to regulate skin moisture.
