In 1,000 years African forest elephants may not be alive. Elephants need hundreds of liters of water per day to survive. They will not be able to get enough water because of increased rates of evaporation and decreased rainfall in Africa. Elephants are unable to grow their tusks back after humans harvest them to sell. Without elephant’s tusks they will not be able to strip bark off of trees. Bark aids their digestion and contains calcium which helps form bones and teeth. An elephant's diet consists of grasses, leaves, shrubs, fruits, roots, and bark. After climate change they might have access to bark, fruits, roots, and shrubs. African forest elephants are slightly smaller than other species of elephants. But, since the rainforests are getting smaller and less dense, the African forest elephants might grow because of the open space. If elephants fail to adapt they might go extinct.
