Modern-day Arapaimas are possibly the largest freshwater fish, living in the Amazon rainforest. They have large, armored scales to shield themselves from attackers. Also, they have a large tail for speed in persuing prey, with both lungs and gills. Green and red scales cover their bodies to blend in with the foliage of the Amazon. In the evolved Arapaima, the large tail is replaced by a more angular and small tail, used for bursts of speed. Overall, the evolved Arapaima is more adapted as an ambush predator. The gills are lost, and only lungs are utilized. The coloration is much darker to blend in with the bare earth from deforestation. Finally, a slightly larger mouth has been evolved to increase the chances of catching prey, which is few and far between.
