The axolotl, native to the rivers of the Mexican rainforest, is currently experiencing a decline in its habitat, and in the future, may live in a grassland. Traditionally, it feeds on small fish, insects, and worms; however, as its environment shifts toward grassland, it may evolve to consume small reptiles. This adaptation could involve the development of dewlaps on its head instead of gills and a spiked tail for defense. If pursued by predators, the axolotl might evolve the ability to stab with its tail its attacker and escape. As it adapts to life on land, it may take on more reptilian characteristics, including a brown coloration that helps it blend into its surroundings. Since some axolotls are already brown, it is plausible that all of them could eventually adopt this coloration. Ultimately, the axolotl could transform from a gilled aquatic
creature into a lizard, fighting for its survival.
