The jaguar is known for its strength, stealth, and patterned coat as a predator of the tropical rainforest. As climate change transforms its habitat, jaguars in the future may differ from the ones we know today.
Gradually rising temperatures and decreased rainfall could transform the rainforest into a savanna. In other words, a dry, open grassland with scattered trees. This new environment will leave the jaguar with fewer places to hide, resulting in the jaguar’s spotted coat fading to a lighter tan to help it blend into the dry grass. Its body will become leaner and taller, with longer legs for running after prey including antelopes and wild boars.
These adaptations will help the jaguar survive in a world that looks very different from the rainforest it calls home today. By looking out for these changes, we can better understand nature and the importance of protecting our planet’s biodiversity.
