The aye ayes live in the tropical rainforests in Madagascar, which are turning into savannahs due to climate change. Unless there are trees preserved for these animals, the aye aye will be forced to move their nests from trees to underground. They will no longer need their long teeth to gnaw into wood to find insects and larvae. Instead, they will need a longer tongue to locate the insect larvae in the ground. With the temperature increasing and less shade because of deforestation, the aye aye’s fur will become less dense to help these animals remain cooler. They will no longer be able to build their nests in trees, and will instead need to dig into the ground for shelter. Their long fingers will help them with this, instead of being primarily used to tap on wood to find their food.
