In the future habitat of the dhole, dry seasons have scarce water. However, in the rainy season, the monsoons are so bad that the area floods. This environment is called a seasonal floodplain. In this environment, the dhole’s old prey of ungulates are all but gone. Instead, during the dry season, the dhole preys on birds, monkeys, and small rodents. During the rainy season, they prey on fish, amphibians, and occasional aquatic reptiles. To catch their prey they have webbed feet for steering, a paddle like tail to move forward barbels to find prey in the dark. Tigers thrive in this environment, and competition between them and dholes is fierce. To defend themselves they continue to live in packs. However, in the dry season, when food is scarce, they often break up or cannibalize each other. In this future environment, dholes have a tough life.
