Gerp’s mouse lemur lives in the tropical rain forests of Madagascar, where it depends on dense trees for shelter, food, and protection. The lemur has dark and thick fur to blend in and stay warm in the shaded areas of the forest. In the future, rising temperatures and deforestation may turn parts of its forest into drier woodland or savanna. To survive, the lemur may adapt by developing longer legs and stronger hind limbs for traveling greater distances between scattered trees. Its fur could become lighter and thinner to help release heat and blend into drier environments. Larger ears may help regulate body temperature and improve hearing to detect predators in more open habitats. It may also become more omnivorous, eating insects, fruits, and nectar from a wider range of plants. These adaptations would help Gerp’s mouse lemur survive in a warmer, savanna type future environment.
