Today’s Tree Kangaroos live in treetops of the rainforest of New Guinea. Tree kangaroos have strong limbs, long curved claws, and a balancing tail for climbing and leaping 60 feet down to the ground. The bottom of their feet are covered with tough rubbery skin to stop them from slipping on wet branches. They have pouches to store their Joey and food, such as leaves and fruit. In the future, the island will experience warmer, dryer conditions. Its habitat will be more of a savanna with less trees and dried up water sources. As a result, the Tree Kangaroo will migrate to cooler zones higher up the mountains and eat plants like pine needles and moss on rocks. Its future-day features include: a smaller body to stay cooler and need less food, a light-colored, thicker fur to handle cooler temperatures, and the development of a thumb to climb the mountainside.
