The okapi eats leaves, buds, grasses, ferns, fruits, and fungi. The okapi predators are leopards, humans, and other felines. The okapi had a long tongue around (14-18 inches long). The okapi is about the size of a horse. They have glands between their toes on all four feet that leave a scent, helping them mark their territory in dense forest.
In the future deforestation will hurt the okapi. As demand for hardwood increases, trees will be rapidly cut down. The Ituri rainforest is the second biggest rainforest in the world.
The okapi is a "selective browser," meaning it carefully picks from over 100 specific plant species, including certain fungi and fast growing seedlings that only thrive in forest openings, which will be chopped down in the near future making the okapi to evolve for new foods. It will also have to go in groups like giraffes to survive from predators.
