Axolotls live in freshwater lakes and use their feathery gills to breathe underwater. They can regrow body parts if they get hurt, which helps them survive. In the future, pollution and climate change may make the water dirtier and lower in oxygen. The axolotl may develop a brownish or rainbowish color to blend in with muddy water. It may also grow extra baby nostrils to help clean and filter the air and oxygen. Its gills may become stronger to help it breathe in low-oxygen water. These new adaptations will help the axolotl survive in a changing habitat, just like its current adaptations help it live underwater today.
