Currently, as of early 2026, jaguars have dark, rosette-spotted coats for camouflage in dense shadows in the rainforest. As well as incredible camouflage skills, jaguars are also extremely strong swimmers, have powerful jaws to catch prey, have very strong and clear vision, and have a compact, muscular body with short legs and large heads so that they can manage the tangled rainforest. In the future, after environmental change, jaguars may have more sandy fur for camouflage, as the environment may convert to a savannah-like landscape. They also may lose their long, balancing tails, have smaller bodies to manage the heat, focus more on their hearing than their vision due to the sandier, quieter landscape, develop stronger limbs, and potentially stop hunting and begin feeding on smaller organisms such as insects. As the jaguars’ environment changes over time, their traits may potentially have drastic changes.
