The toucan is a bird famous for its large, colorful beak, which it uses to help regulate its body temperature. But what if rainforests became even hotter? In that case, a toucan’s beak might evolve to become even larger to release more heat and keep the bird cool.
As the beak grows bigger, the toucan’s body would likely increase in size as well. A larger body would require stronger muscles, which means the toucan would need more protein in its diet. To meet these nutritional needs, it might begin hunting animals that are rich in protein and nutrients.
To successfully hunt this new prey, the toucan’s beak would need to change too becoming sharper, denser, and better suited for capturing animals rather than just eating fruit. Since the beak already plays a role in attracting mates, its bright colors could also attract other animals, making prey easier to hunt.
