The jaguar is a powerful and adaptable big cat that thrives in dense, vegetated areas across the Americas. They prefer moist environments such as tropical rainforests, wetlands, subtropical regions, and areas near rivers and lakes. Around 57% of the world’s jaguars live in the Amazon Rainforest, which serves as a major stronghold for the species. Jaguars range from the southern United States and northern Mexico down through Brazil and into southern Argentina. They often rest on sturdy tree branches, using trees for shade and safety. In the future, jaguars may expand into more savanna habitats with open plains, scattered trees, and small water sources. In these environments, they may need to adapt by developing greater speed and endurance to chase praying open planes. As carnivorous apex predators and keystone species, jaguars regulate herbivore populations. Their powerful bite can crush turtle shells, pierce skulls, and they are strong swimmers that catch fish.
