The Madagascan penny chameleon, called Brookesia nana , is one of the smallest reptiles ever discovered from Northern Madagascar. They are about ½ inch long, around the size of a Madagascan Penny . This chameleon lives on the rainforest floor and uses its brown tint to blend into fallen leaves and avoid predators.
This chameleon eats microscopic bugs like mites and springtails that live on the ground, making them easy to find.
Because of climate change and deforestation, this chameleon adapted to a desert habitat. In response to the new, arid climate, they evolved thicker, lighter skin to survive the desert and predators.
Another adaptation is its mouth. This chameleon grew larger and evolved sharper teeth which helps it hunt bigger prey. It also has evolved stronger jaws to catch and eat larger animals.
These unique adaptations allow this chameleon, formerly native to Madagascar’s rainforests, to survive in the harsh desert environment.
