The dark eyed junco is an adaptive species that is well equipped for the future. Many of the dark-eyed juncos’ current threats result from habitat loss, causing a need for juncos to adapt to urban environments. Urban juncos are already becoming less stressed among humans. The dark-eyed juncos legs may lengthen to keep their plumage further from the ground and free from dirt, their legs and toes will also likely evolve into having more dexterity and finesse so they can better handle tools to get food which will become harder to find. As the sky and ground darken with smog and infrastructure the plumage of the species will darken to better camouflage the bird from above and below. Finally, junco’s will evolve to have shorter wingspans to fit into tighter spaces and avoid mid-flight crashes requiring more powerful muscles and a body better suited for city life.
