Crested geckos are a vulnerable species that live in New Caledonian rainforests. At this time these geckos are suffering in their current habitat due to community growth, an invasive ant species, and being trafficked to own in captivity. A future habitat for these crested geckos are almost entirely full of buildings, roads, and civilization. Being an arboreal species, the lack of trees due to these new found cities is a problem. Without the cover of their homes the geckos will be more susceptible to traffickers, and invasive ants. Some useful adaptations are shell and darker color variations. Having a shell gives them a hard exterior to protect them from invasive species, pets in the new communities, and hide from traffickers, while having darker colors lets them blend in and hide with their surroundings. Having a shell and darker color variations would make being a terrestrial species a lot safer.
