The okapi is the rainforest relative of the giraffe. The okapi lives in the rainforest,so it’s different from the giraffe. The okapi has a dark brown-purple skin that gives it camouflage. Unlike the giraffe, the okapi has a shorter neck to prevent it from hitting its head on branches. This animal has a long tongue to grab fruits and leaves from branches. Climate change’s increased carbon has increased the temperatures to the point that it is not able to support life. This has also led to less rainfall to support the trees there. The okapi would have to change it’s skin to become like the grass for camouflage from predators. The okapi would also have to change its food source from leaves and fruits to grass since there are fewer trees. The name “xerokapi” is from the prefix xero, which means dry.
