The green Basilisks are lizards found in the tropical rain forests of Central America. They slap their large hind feet really fast on water to make tiny air pockets. This helps them run on the surface of water to protect themselves from predators. Research shows that 40% of the Amazon rainforest will be changing in the future due to deforestation and climate change, gradually becoming a dry savannah and changing the basilisk’s habitat. Then the Basilisk will be called the Spikealisk. It will develop brown stripes on its body to camouflage. Its feet will get flatter and stronger to run fast on land because there will be no water. It will get sharper claws to dig burrows to live and to find insects to eat. The crest on its body will change to spikes for defense. Spikes on its whip like tail will help chase predators away.
