Luna is powered by solar electricity and is controlled remotely. Using the arm to drill, it digs into the lunar soil with a guard to prevent excessive gathering of regolith, which the arm is then able to fold compactly. After the digging process has completed, a panel opens at the underside of the bot, which opens to the ground or just above to avoid damage and the bot can move forward to scoop up regolith. The panel then closes, containing a moderate amount of soil within the underside of the bot, where it can be transported without loss of the collected soil. Due to the underside of the bot needing to contain lunar regolith for transport, the engines and other mechanical parts of the robot are stored near the back side of the robot, where they are elevated from the ground to prevent damage caused by rocks or difficult terrain.
