As I built a robot with the ability to traverse the moon, a few conditions had to be considered, such as the lunar regolith, reduced gravity, temperature, and differing terrain. Watabot features a conveyor belt system with scoops that are enclosed in a tube which ensures the regolith is contained to avoid it drifting away due to the lower gravity. The conveyor belt system also supports a fan and a trap door system that helps pull the lunar regolith into the storage area that makes up the majority of the robot. Watabot is made of aluminum and other materials that are extremely durable and have the ability to withstand extreme temperatures and radiation, allowing Watabot to endure extreme weather changes on the moon. One of the biggest challenges when designing the Watabot, was the consideration of the different conditions it would encounter on the moon compared to those on Earth.
