Our wormbot is made up of a series of “snail shells” that are used to move, collect, store, and dump regolith. The wormbot has exterior teeth to provide grip and an interior spiral that collects regolith as the wormbot moves and can dump it simply by moving in reverse. It can have 2 separate motors connecting to each of the sides allowing for counter forces so the bot can remain stationary when dumping or gathering regolith if wanted. There is also a separate center compartment that is used to store motors, batteries, gears, and whatever else needs to be kept away from regolith. With our current prototype we have about 75% of the volume of our wormbot storing regolith. Our simple design removes points of failure and allows for simple changes to be made easily.
