The surgical multi-tool will be used when the astronauts get a wound that requires surgery. The 12.77 millimeter scalpel could be used for cutting a small bone enough to break it during a surgery. An example for using the 12.77 millimeter scalpel is if a bone in the finger healed the wrong way and a doctor needed to rebreak the bone to set it into the correct place. The 4.9 millimeter scalpel could be used for cutting into a muscle. An example is when you need to amputate a limb. The 1.6 millimeter scalpel could be used for a delicate invasive surgery. An example of this is for cutting into the mouth to remove teeth or eyeball surgery. The big heptagonal shape allows the astronauts to hold it easily. The scalpels are designed in a way that doesn’t allow them to be always be out. This is good for the fact that in an important surgery you don’t want all three scalpels to be out.The scalpel would be made out of stainless steel and the blue heptagon would be made out of ABS plastic.
