As an engineering oriented teen, I was challenged by to create a medical device to use on the mission to set humans on mars. I gladly accepted, and after planning and creating for days, I came up with the hand exerciser. In space, lack of gravity causes muscle decay without regular workouts. Although I could not find what exercise equipment would be on the mars mission, I found that the ISS has a simulated benchpress, a treadmill, and a spin bike. None of these exercises the hands, making a device like mine crucial. The finger exerciser is made not to be strong, but to be lightweight. This is because products like this are prone to breaking after being used too much. I was trying to solve this problem when I realized I was looking at it from the wrong point of view. Rather than making it durable, I could make it light and small so it could be printed multiple times.
