Ascorbic Acid, more commonly known as vitamin C, is composed of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. Its molecular formula is C₆H₈O₆, and its density is 1.65 g/cm3. Ascorbic acid is white to slightly yellowish in color. Also, it is a crystalline powder, practically odorless, and has a strong acidic taste. It is an acid with roughly a pH of 2. Ascorbic acid is soluble in water. It is naturally found in citrus fruits and many vegetables. Ascorbic acid is an essential nutrient in human diets, and necessary to maintain healthy connective tissue and bone. Vitamin C is considered to be a powerful antioxidant that aids the immune system and prevents damage to cells exposed to toxins. For example, the harm caused by a common vapor, cigarette smoke, can be reduced with vitamin C. Additionally, it is used to produce a protein called collagen, which is used to heal wounds and maintain healthy skin, gums, bones, and blood vessels. For instance, when there isn't much collagen in the body, bones and joints tend to rub together, creating aches and pains. The pains are signs of arthritis, but can easily be reduced with ascorbic acid. Furthermore, ascorbic acid helps the body absorb and store iron. Unfortunately for humans, humans cannot produce their own vitamin C. That means the only way to receive it, is to eat it. Every day people take vitamin C supplements because it has many advantages for life. Ascorbic acid is found everywhere and is essential for people to survive.
