Menthol is a molecule made up of 10 carbon atoms, 20 hydrogen atoms, and 1 oxygen atom. The main application for menthol, is its cooling effect, which is often contained in many mint extracts! In its pure form, menthol is a flaky, white crystal, which is solid at room temperature. Menthol is also used for its antibacterial properties, as it can kill harmful bacteria, at small amounts, and help soothe coughs. Apart from this, it is beneficial to oral hygiene, as it can remove plaque, and help prevent gingivitis, mouth sores, and other dental problems. Some examples of household applications of menthol are toothpaste, hand soap, and lotions.
