Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound that consists of two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms (H2O2). The two oxygen atoms are combined together by a covalent single bond. Hydrogen peroxide is colorless, but has many purposes and uses. Hydrogen peroxide is used to treat and clean wounds, such as minor cuts, scrapes, and burns to prevent any infection. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used as a disinfectant, as it can kill germs, most viruses and bacteria. Additionally, it can be used for bleaching or lightening your hair and removing any stains. Though only 3 percent concentration of hydrogen peroxide is used for household cleaning, as a higher concentration could be dangerous. This 3 percent hydrogen peroxide can be found at your local pharmacies. However, this chemical is unstable so it can break down slowly to form water and oxygen gas when it comes into contact with air or water.
