Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, is a clear and colorless alcohol made from different biomass materials called feedstocks. It’s liquid and its molecular formula is C2H5OH or C2H6O. Ethanol is very effective in killing microorganisms, it’s a common ingredient in hand sanitizers that people use daily. Ethanol’s also used in personal care products and household products. Ethanol’s also known to be used in many food additives and many alcoholic beverages. Ethanol’s widely used in fuel, as more than 97% of US fuel contains ethanol. Also, in 2019, the ethanol industry directly employed 68,684 American workers and helped an additional 280,327 indirectly across the economy. On top of all this, ethanol’s also helped reduce a lot of carbon - the equivalent of 20 million cars! Lastly, ethanol biorefineries generate very nutritious animal feed like distillers grains.
