CARBON DIOXIDE & IT’S RELEVANCE The carbon dioxide molecule has a formula of CO2, where a carbon atom is attached to two oxygen atoms via a double bond. Carbon dioxide is colorless, odorless gas under normal temperatures and pressure. It is generated when animals breathe. Carbon dioxide is important because when animal breathe out CO2, plants take the CO2 and convert it back to oxygen for the planet and sugar for itself. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that is naturally in the atmosphere and keeps our planet from being too cold. Carbon dioxide is also created when fossil fuels or coal is burned. Sadly, too much CO2 is being put into the atmosphere and this is one of the factors causing climate change.
