Salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl). It takes a crystalline form, very similar to ice cubes. It is necessary for human life in general, being one of the essential elements for our bodies to remain healthy. In fact, it’s one of the four basic human tastes because it is so essential. However, salt has many other uses. First of all, it’s one of the oldest seasonings in the world, evidence showing it being processed as long as 6,000 years ago, and without it, food tastes very bland. It’s also one of the oldest preservatives, playing an important role in keeping food fresh before the invention of refrigerators. Salt also has a role in religious ceremonies, and other cultural uses. In conclusion, salt is a substance that is not only necessary for our health, but also something that impacts human culture in many different ways.
