Nicotine is synonymous with cigarettes or tobacco. However, what most people don’t realize is that nicotine is a organic compound, and one of very few liquid alkaloids. In its pure state, it is colorless, odorless and has an oily consistency. It was used in insecticides but due to fatal side effects it was withdrawn from usage. Nicotine contains carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. hydrogen and carbon both have positive charges. Carbon has a +4 charge and hydrogen has a +1 charge while nitrogen has a -1 negative charge. The chemical formula for nicotine is C10H14N2. This means 10 carbon molecules, 14 hydrogen molecules, and 2 nitrogen molecules. When nicotine is exposed to light or air, it changes turns brown and gives of the smell of tobacco. Nicotine is the chemical in cigarette’s that make them so addictive.. Nicotine is widely used and there is continued research to understand its organic compound.
