DIANA stands for Deep Insight on Adaptation to Natural Assets. I chose the name for several reasons. First, in Roman mythology, Diana was the goddess of hunting, and the 2020 Mars rover will be hunting for core samples and signs of life. It will be the first planned return of samples from another planet and similar to the Apollo missions which returned samples from the moon. Second, Diana was closely related to other gods that space missions have been named after. Diana was the twin sister of Apollo and half sister of Mars. In Greek mythology, Diana was known as Artemis, the name of NASA’s mission to return to the moon by 2024. Third, I like DIANA’s connection to Apollo because my grandpa worked on the Apollo missions. DIANA is also the name of Wonder Woman, my sister’s favorite superhero. Just like Wonder Woman, DIANA will accomplish amazing feats.
