My idea for an RPS-powered spacecraft will explore and orbit Mercury. Mercury is largely unexplored, with only one spacecraft as of now to have its primary mission be exploring Mercury, MESSENGER. I know solar power is an option, but RPS will provide a longer life for the craft. The Mercury Planetary and Atmospheric Orbiter (PLATO) will use multiple gravity-assisted slingshots from Venus to ensure proper orbit insertion. PLATO will have a system to protect from radiation as well. It will make high-quality measurements of the planet’s exosphere, which includes minuscule amounts of the elements oxygen, hydrogen, potassium, and sodium. PLATO will also make a detailed map of Mercury, and get high-resolution photographs. In summary, the Mercury Planetary and Atmospheric Orbiter will enhance our understanding of Mercury, with unique instruments to fulfill all of the mission requirements! My special power is my extensive knowledge about astrophysics, especially power like RPS; this will support mission success. Since I love this area of science, I’ll think ahead and make sure PLATO has the right sensors, cameras, and data transmitters. My passion and knowledge for space will ensure that the Mercury Planetary and Atmospheric Orbiter will make this planet more deeply explored and understood.
