We want to go to Mars and I want to help build a sustainable living colony. My main focus of this mission will be using Radioisotope Power Systems to help grow food. Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) are a type of nuclear battery. They rely on the decay of Plutonium-238 to produce heat that can then be converted into electricity. These types of batteries have a long life span making them ideal for this kind of mission. I would build a greenhouse that used solar power and RPS. Mars has many dust storms and cold winters where solar may fail. The RPS would be the backup keeping the greenhouse warm and the fruits and vegetables growing. My knowledge of propagating plants is my special power. Propagation is a sustainable way to grow plants. It is a very helpful skill to have, especially in a very remote setting with limited supplies. I think Radioisotope Power Systems are the key to sustainable living on Mars.
