This wheel uses a series of interlocking semicircle shaped teeth that can provide different amounts of traction on the Martian surface. When rolled against the grain the wheel provides a lot of grip in martian sand and soil, whereas, when rolled with the grain the wheel can provide a smooth ride over rocks that are on the Martian surface. The wheels are made out of aerospace-grade aluminum and titanium in order to ensure that the wheels are durable enough to withstand many years on mars. The wheels are also very wide (39 centimeters) in order to ensure that the rover can deliver a lot of power to the ground.
