The Adaptive Wheel 2.0 has 4 thick main treads. These allow it to roll over large rocks. If it is driving on sand, however, the sand will go between the large treads. Under the large treads, there are thinner chevron - patterned treads. This layout provides good grip on sand, while not slowing it down on other surfaces. There are also 2 cylinders sticking out of the wheel. They are soil analyzers. One is in the extended position (with a cone sticking out), and one is in the retracted position (no cone sticking out). In the extended position, the analyzer digs into the soil, and analyzes it. This eliminates the need for a robotic arm (except for situations where the wheel cannot reach, and if samples need to be collected), and saves energy.
