When considering the veterans, we do not take account of the people who were blinded because of enemy causes. Around 133,000 veterans are blind because of natural causes or during combat. The star base of the pin represents the 50 stars of the United States flag. The reason why the pin is called “Respect to the Blind” is because around the ring, there is braille that translates to either “Est. 1776”, “Veteran” and “U.S.A.,” but it may or may not be present. The United States land in the middle respects the 50 states that have the veterans (Puerto Rico would have been included, but there was none had Puerto Rico). There are flags out on the side, representing the flag of the United States. The ring holding some items is just a placeholder. It would be considerate to thank the veterans, especially the one who may be blind.
