My pin is in the shape of a shield and the colors on the pin are blue, white, red, and black. The word on my pin spells out, “Thank you veterans” on the top of the pin and on the bottom it says,” We love you”. In the middle of the pin there is a picture of a poppy. The poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields. On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion. The poppy is also important because it makes us non-veterans know that we can support our fallen veterans who have protected us from enemy attack.
